High-ranking congressmen have insisted that members of the House of Representatives are united behind Speaker Martin Romualdez amid rumors of a leadership change.
Deputy Speaker Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin and Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre both attended a party leaders' meeting Wednesday, Sept. 10 that was led by Romualdez and presidential son, Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos.
"[It was a] Meeting with party leaders [regarding] tasks and priorities of congress with the ultimate goal of bringing the govt closer to the people," Garin said of the gathering Wednesday.
"The House is united and will focus on work and deliverables. No changes in leadership," she added.
The meeting was held even as the Committee of Appropriations was holding its fourth week of deliberations on the P6.793-trillion National Expenditure Program (NEP) or proposed national budget for 2026.
"This is a House that stands united—clear in our duty, firm in our purpose, and strong in our resolve to serve the people who sent us here. And we move forward together with one conviction: that the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez remains steady, trusted, and unchanged," Acidre said.
Acidre, chairman of the House Committee of Higher and Technical Education, said there was "no question, no hesitation, no second-guessing" of Romualdez's standing in the 300-plus strong chamber.
"Our Speaker continues to lead us, and we continue to follow with confidence," he said.
"We know that in times like these, what our people need most is stability, not distraction; unity, not division; service, not politics. That is why we remain firmly behind Speaker Romualdez," he added.
Romualdez, Leyte's 1st district congressman, sits as president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.
