ILOILO CITY — Iloilo province is again repurposing campaign materials of candidates in the last elections into marketable products.
The Iloilo provincial government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Philippines, launched the Weave Out Waste (WOW) Limpyo Iloilo last Sept. 9.
“By transforming post-election plastic wastes collected, Iloilo is demonstrating how waste can be given a second life and turned into marketable products,” said UNDP Philippines Resident Representative Dr. Selva Ramachandran.
WOW Limpyo Iloilo is an upcycling program implemented under UNDP’s Plastics Circularity Project supported by the Coca-Cola Foundation.
The WOW Limpyo Iloilo program backs the provincial government’s vision for Iloilo to become a leading area in Western Visayas region for circular economy, which is an economic model that promotes recycling and upscaling of products.
“Solid waste management is a problem that we can address if we have the will and determination to put up local administration policies in our programs and projects,” said Provincial Administrator Raul Banias on behalf of Gov. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr.
The program initially started in 2022 when Defensor signed an executive order and was amended after this year’s election.
Defensor not only pushed for a massive post-election cleanup drive dubbed as Limpyo Eleksyon but also encouraged repurposing the campaign materials in the 42 towns and component city.
