Several organizations staged a protest at EDSA Shrine in Ortigas on Thursday, Sept. 11, to denounce alleged corruption in flood control projects and to call for accountability from government officials and contractors.
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), about 200 protesters gathered at around 10 a.m., carrying placards that read;
“Panagutin ang mga sangkot sa korapsyon (Hold all those involved in corruption accountable!),” “Punish all plunderers! Wakasan ang kurapsyon! (End Corruption!),”
“Korapsyon ay wakasan! Simulan ang pananagutan! End corruption! Demand accountability!).”
Demonstrators also chanted, “Mga magnanakaw, ikulong, panagutin! (Thieves must be jailed and held accountable!),” and “Wag nakawain, buwisin namin! (Don’t steal—collect our taxes properly!).”
The rally was led by groups including Tindig Pilipinas, Akbayan, and Siklab, among others.
They called for an independent commission to be formed promptly to investigate the alleged irregularities and punish those responsible.
Personnel from the MMDA and the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) were deployed to manage traffic and ensure peace and order during the event.
Similar protests will continue at the EDSA Shrine on Saturday, Sept. 13, as part of their campaign against corruption.
