Google recently announced the new Pixel 10 phones.
The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 XL, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. These devices have an IP68 rating, which makes them dust and water resistant. And yes, that includes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google claims it is the first foldable to have such a rating.
The performance of the Pixel phones has always been praised worthy. Their cameras are impressive and are regarded as among the best in smartphones. However, Pixel phones have another edge. Being Google’s own hardware, Pixel phones get first dibs on the newest Android features. This includes OS updates and security updates as soon as they are available, unlike other phones that run on custom Android, where the updates may roll out at a later time.
More than that, these days, Pixel phones get Google’s newest AI features. Even if you’re not a fan of Google hardware, seeing what AI features the Pixel phones have presents a glimpse of what features other Android phones will be releasing.
From a hardware perspective, Google developed the Pixel 10’s Tensor G5 chip with TSMC, a company who makes chips for other companies based on the client’s designs. The Tensor G5, according to Google, will help prevent overheating issues and provide better battery efficiency. That’s something we’ll find out for sure in the coming months.
But the real kicker with the Tensor G5 is the chip is designed to prioritize AI processes and this will allow Gemini Nano to run locally on device. This means, you don’t need the internet for your Pixel to access the cloud to process AI tasks.
Here’s an example of what that could mean: With Pixel 10, you can run real-time live translations during calls. Think about using translations and usually it takes about a moment or two before language is translated, right? With Gemini Nano running locally on the device, those moments spent translating the call becomes zero. We haven’t tested this feature ourselves. But we can expect this feature to roll out in other Android phones in the coming months.
One of the newest AI features from Pixel 10 is Magic Cue. This is where Gemini has more access on your device. Basically, Gemini stores information that you may need later. For instance, you have made dinner reservations. When messaging with a friend, they ask you the time, date, and location of the planned dinner. Gemini can pull that information right away, so you can instantly send it to your friend.
On paper it sounds really interesting. But I can understand if some people may consider it a privacy nightmare. Thankfully, Google will be allowing the option to disable this for those who don’t want it.
Available for the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 XL is Pro Res Zoom, which is Google’s own 100x zoom. However, there is a little trick to this than pure hardware and a bit of digital touch. It uses Gemini for upscaling, which means parts of the images have been generated.
Finally, the feature where I’ve seen a lot of excitement come from: Google’s own version for MagSafe. Pixel has Pixelsnap to support Qi2 wireless charging. No need to own a case with magnets as the device itself will have the proper magnets for charging accessories.
The Google Pixel 10 series will be rolling out soon in the Philippines. There won’t be an official store, as far as we know, but there will be stores that will be putting Pixel 10 phones on their shelves. We’ll update you where exactly you can try these devices for yourself.
