DOT awards Puerto Galera as Philippines' top diving destination

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – The municipality of Puerto Galera in this province was awarded by the Department of Tourism as the country’s foremost diving destination during the recent Philippine Tourism Excellence Awards for Dive Destination 2025-2027.
Vice Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan received the award during a ceremony at the Okada Manila in Pasay City.
Ilagan said that the award entitles Puerto Galera to participate for free in all international dive destination shows.
These, he said, will open up more opportunities to their town as a global dive destination.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco commended Puerto Galera’s contributions along with two other finalists, Moalboal town of Cebu province and Panglao municipality of Bohol province, in attracting international diving enthusiasts and showcasing exceptional marine biodiversity.
“You are the bearers of the good of our country, showing through your work your compassion, your creativity, and your grace, which define the true face of the Philippines,” the Philippine News Agency quoted her as saying during the awarding ceremonies.
Puerto Galera is dubbed the diving capital of the Philippines due to its world-class dive sites and the rich marine life that forms part of the equally world-recognized Verde Island Passage.
The town in the northern part of Oriental Mindoro is also famous for its stunning white sand beaches, diverse outdoor activities like snorkeling and island hopping, and its vibrant nightlife and lively atmosphere.
With its vibrant marine life and dive spots, divers and ocean lovers worldwide regard Puerto Galera as one of the country’s premier underwater paradises.
