Jay Bryan Baricuatro suffered a split decision loss to Martin Molina of Spain, 3-2, in their Round-of-16 50-kilogram class to cap off the country's run in the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England Wednesday, Sept. 10 (Philippine time).
Baricuatro flashed some brilliance and pushed Molina to his limit before three of the five judges saw enough to hand the victory to the European medalist.
The heartbreaking defeat ended the Nationals’ stint in the global tiff which gathered 540 male and female boxers from 66 national federations in 10 categories in both divisions.
Earlier, Riza Pasuit sustained a 5-0 loss to Brazilian Rebeca Santos in the Last 16 of the women’s 60kg category.
Before bowing out, the 32-year-old Pasuit pulled off a second-round stoppage victory over Pagad Alnaimi of Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Ronald Chavez Jr., who had a tight 3-2 triumph against Irish Matthew McCole in Round of 32, lost his footing and stumbled against Euro Games bronze winner Makan Traore of France.
Apart from Baricuatro, Pasuit, and Chavez, Junmilardo Ogayre (men’s 60kg), Mark Ashley Fajardo (65kg), and Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam (55kg) were eliminated a couple of days ago.
