LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co was surprised and dismayed after Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong mentioned his name in controversial flood control projects despite not citing any specific wrongdoing.
“I was surprised to hear Mayor Benjamin Magalong mention my name to the media in connection with the flood control projects without saying what exactly I did,” Co said in a statement Wednesday. “Again, I strongly deny any wrongdoing with respect to his vague claim.”
The lawmaker said he is reserving his right to respond formally before the appropriate body once the details of the allegations are made clear.
Co questioned the impartiality of the planned independent investigation on flood control projects, especially if Magalong himself would be part of the panel.
“It does not give me confidence that this independent body will conduct a fair and unbiased investigation given that the investigation has not started but Mayor Magalong is already giving statements to the media on the subject and my alleged involvement based on rumors and hearsay,” he added.
The controversy over the multi-billion-peso flood control projects has gained traction, with several lawmakers and local officials calling for a full probe into alleged irregularities.
Co, a former chairman of the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, denied any involvement and called the allegations politically motivated and unsubstantiated.
