ZAMBOANGA CITY - The city government, police, and the military gathered on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Freedom Fighters Memorial here to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Zamboanga Siege.
Mayor Khymer Olaso led officials during the wreath-laying ceremony to honor the heroes who lost their lives during the crisis. The event also aimed to recognize the contributions of various sectors during one of the most challenging times in Zamboanga City's history.
"Today, we stand united as a city to remember the lives lost and the sacrifices made during the 2013 siege," Olaso said. "We also recognize the efforts of those who worked tirelessly to rebuild our community and restore peace and order."
Western Mindanao Command acting chief Brig. Gen. Romulo Quemado, on behalf of the Western Mindanao Command, donated a painting entitled "Kasunduan" to the local government.
The painting by Atty. Joseph Isidro symbolizes the partnership between the Westmincom and Zamboanga City in honoring the heroism and unity of the people.
Zamboanga City police chief Police Col. Fidel Fortaleza Jr. said the activity was a call for unity.
The infamous conflict started when MNLF rebels under the command of Nur Chairman Misuari stormed Zamboanga City’s coastal barangays to protest the government’s failure to implement the 1996 peace agreement.
Two-hundred people were killed and 120,000 people were displaced in the almost month-long siege.
