ILOILO CITY — Former Aklan Rep. and Gov. Carlito “Lito” Marquez filed a cyber libel complaint against a radio broadcaster after he was accused of receiving kickbacks from flood control projects.
“I strongly condemn the malicious and fabricated accusations hurled against me by broadcaster Carlo Asturias during his Facebook Live broadcast on Sept. 5, 2025,” Marquez said in a statement.
“He (Asturias) falsely claimed that I amassed over P100 million from flood control projects in Aklan. This statement is a blatant lie that is false, baseless, and malicious,” added Marquez.
The online attack against Marquez by Asturias comes days before former Aklan second district Rep. Ted Haresco was named as one of those who allegedly asked kickbacks from companies owned by the Discaya family.
Marquez has sought legal remedy under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 for what he deemed as online defamation by Asturias.
“Such reckless words do not only attempt to tarnish my family name, but also cast doubt on the years of honest service that we have devoted to the people of Aklan,” added Marquez.
“I cannot allow lies like this to mislead our people,” said Marquez, who served governor for nine years and nine years as congressman.
Marqiez noted that over the years, he worked with local leaders, including Gov. Jose Enrique “Joen” Miraflores and incumbent Rep. Florencio “Joeben” Miraflores of the second district.
“Since 2004, the projects we have implemented have safeguarded communities and improved lives,” noted Marquez.
