PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Eastern Samar at 2:56 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Phivolcs said the epicenter was located 12 kilometers northwest of General Macarthur, Eastern Samar, at a depth of 21 kilometers.
The tremor was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Borongan City, Eastern Samar; and Dulag, Leyte.
Intensity II (slightly felt) was reported in Hernani, Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Alangalang, and Palo in Leyte; and Silago, Southern Leyte.
Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) was recorded in Leyte and Hilongos in Leyte; Palapag and Rosario in Northern Samar; San Fernando, Pampanga; Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon; and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.
It added that no damage or aftershocks are expected.
