With the development, the 35-year-old Diego will be the fifth coach of the Lady Bulldogs in a span of eight years, succeeding Sherwin Meneses, who helped NU win its second straight crown in a one-and-done stint.
A multi-titled libero during her UAAP days with the De La Salle Lady Spikers, Diego has steadily built her coaching résumé from grassroots to the professional ranks and her new role wouldn’t be the first time she has forged a partnership with NU as she had already guided its juniors team
She previously guided CALABARZON and NCR to titles in the Palarong Pambansa girls’ volleyball tilt.
Diego called the shots for the star-studded NU’s juniors team -- which was then bannered by Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Camilla Lamina, and Vange Alinsug -- to a Season 82 championship via a dominant 14-0 sweep.
Despite the success, Diego decided to part ways with the juniors team in 2021.
She handled the Under-17 and Under-19 Philippine squads before she took charge of F2 Logistics in the Premier Volleyball League in 2023 before the team disbanded the same year.
Last week, Sherwin’s wife Nerissa clarified that her husband only had a one-year deal with NU.
NU is expected to undergo a rebuilding phase as it guns for a historic three-peat despite losing several pillars in Belen, Solomon, Sheena Toring, and Erin Pangilinan, who have all completed their academic duties.
