Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to safeguard the conduct of the first-ever parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on Oct. 13.
Teodoro delivered the directive during his visit to the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) at Camp Siongco in Brgy. Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte on Saturday, Sept. 6.
Calling the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections a “milestone in the democratic journey of the Bangsamoro,” the defense chief underscored the importance of non-partisanship in military operations and urged troops to shield the polls from political interference.
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6ID and JTFC, expressed full support for Teodoro’s directive and affirmed the readiness and dedication of the troops to protect the Bangsamoro people’s right to choose their leaders in a secure environment.
“In addition to election security, Secretary Teodoro also announced ongoing efforts to revisit and revise the military pension law—initiatives that will further uplift the welfare and morale of soldiers and their families,” Major June Mark Matugas, 6ID spokesperson, said.
For the first time, the Bangsamoro people will elect their own regional parliament, a mandate under the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) that established BARMM in 2019, after years of negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The would-be elected leaders will replace the transition government that has governed the region since Bangsamoro’s creation.
Security officials have repeatedly emphasized the need for heightened vigilance as the BARMM prepares for the historic vote, especially since the region has a history of politically motivated clashes, private armed groups, and rido (clan feuds), which have often turned violent during election season.
Teodoro was joined by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Philippine Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) acting commander Brig. Gen. Romulo D. Quemado II, and 1st Infantry Division (1ID) commander Maj. Gen. Yegor Rey P. Barroquillo Jr.
