Manila LGU boosts animal welfare compliance, launches photo contest at Manila Zoo

Merging public service with cultural promotion, the City of Manila convened pet shop owners to reinforce animal welfare standards and, in celebration of Tourism and Creative Industries Month, unveiled a photography contest inviting the public to capture the beauty of Manila Zoo.
On September 5, a meeting was held between pet shop owners of Arranque Market and key city officials, including Dr. Joselito T. Diaz, Officer-in-Charge of the Veterinary Inspection Board (VIB); Dr. Hector David Dimaculangan, Chief of the Manila City Pound; and Mr. Joey Hizon III, Director of the Market Administration Office, along with his team.
The meeting aimed to strengthen the regulation and oversight of pet shop operations in accordance with existing national and local policies on animal welfare, sanitation, and business operations.
As part of the initiative, the VIB team also offered veterinary consultations to the pet shop owners, emphasizing responsible animal care and improved hygiene practices in market environments.
This collaborative effort is part of the city government’s broader strategy to enhance coordination between local authorities and the business sector, ensuring that public markets remain compliant, humane, and health-conscious.
In line with the city’s celebration of Manila Tourism and Creative Industries Month, the Manila City Government also announced the launch of the Manila Zoo Photo Walk and Contest. This initiative is being organized in partnership with Henry’s Cameras, the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila (DTCAM), and the Manila Zoo.
The photo walk will be held on September 12, providing photographers with the opportunity to capture the unique wildlife and scenery of the revitalized Manila Zoo.
The culmination and awarding of winners will take place on September 29, with selected entries to be showcased at the Manila Zoo Gallery.
The contest is open to all digital camera users.
Interested participants must first register for the photo walk at https://forms.gle/v559LaXFafw5s3zB7 and then schedule their zoo visit through https://www.manilazoo.ph/book-appointment
