A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, Sept 7, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Phivolcs said the tremor, which is tectonic in origin, occurred at 3:29 p.m.
It added that the quake’s epicenter was located 84 kilometers northeast of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur.
According to Phivolcs, the tremor has a depth of 22 kilometers.
The agency said it has not recorded any reported damage or aftershocks as of posting.
Phivolcs reminded the public to brace for possible aftershocks following the quake.
The Philippines is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
