To most Filipinos, abortion is detestable--something that must never be spoken about or even entertained as a nugget of thought.
But Cavite 4th district Rep. Francis "Kiko" Barzaga is willing to have abortion decriminalized for a very specific sector--rape victims.
"I seek to legalize abortion for rape victims," Barzaga, an assistant majority leader in the 20th Congress, wrote in a Facebook post Saturday, Sept. 6.
The solon from Dasmariñas City gave a very clear-cut, sympathetic reason for wanting to do so.
"It's disheartening to see people losing their futures due to pregnancies caused by sexual assault," Barzaga said.
Abortion is illegal in the Philippines under any circumstance, according to the Revised Penal Code (RPC) of 1930. This covers victims of rape and incest.
It remains to be seen if the self-proclaimed "congressmeow" will follow through with his pronouncement with a bill.
