Paalam, Ogayre seek big wins in second round of World Boxing Championships

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam and Junmilardo Ogayre seek to sustain their momentum when they battle in the Round of 32 of their respective weight classes on Sunday, Sept. 7, in the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England.
Paalam, 27, faces a daunting task in the men’s 55kgs when he challenges a young but lethal Junior Alcantara of Dominican Republic.
Though only 20, Alcantara boasts of a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He also a Pan American champion in 2023.
Paalam, for his part, boasts of his own list of achievements that include two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games. The Bukidnon-born pug is also a 2022 Asian champion and a bronze medalist at the 2018 Asian Games.
Paalam hopes to carry the same energy that won him a unanimous 5-0 decision over Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Chiao-Chu in the opening round.
Meanwhile, Ogayre squares off with Kazakh Biibars Zhexen in the men’s 60kg division after dismantling Taiwanese Lai Chu-Eun via unanimous 5-0 decision in his fight bout.
Zhexen, however, is not to be taken lightly as the Kazakh fighter already fought 44 times in his pro career with a 30-14-0 record.
Also out to boost their campaigns are Riza Pasuit against Ragad Alnaimi of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Round of 32 of the women’s 60kg.
Mark Ashley Fajardo (men’s 65kg) and Jay Bryan Baricuatro (50kg) are also scheduled to compete in the coming days against Ukraine’s Elvin Aliiev and Spain’s Martin Molina, respectively.
At press time, Ronald Chavez is battling Matthew McCole of Ireland in the men’s 70kg.
