Six days after the government ordered a shutdown of the power provider in Siquijor, President Marcos said the power supply in the island province has been fully restored.
"[M]alakas na ang loob ko na i-proclaim na buo na ang supply ng kuryente dito sa Siquijor (I am now confident enough to proclaim that the power supply here in Siquijor is fully restored)," Marcos said during his visit in Siquijor on Friday, Sept. 5.
Marcos was in the island province to lead the ceremonial switch on of the 17.8-megawatt New Siquijor Diesel Power Plants at the Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative (PROSIELCO) in Larena.
The President said that after the government took over the operations of power supply in the province, it has improved. He added that they only need to fix the system to ensure uninterrupted operations in the province.
"[N]asisiyahan pa rin ako na pagbalik ko rito, mai-announce ko talaga nang malakas ang loob ko, sasabihin ko, okay na ang supply, ayusin lang natin ang sistema (But I am still glad that when I return here, I can confidently announce and say, the supply is already okay; we just need to fix the system)," Marcos said.
He further said that whenever there is an outage in one area, they already have a system in place to shift the supply source from the other power plants.
Designed to secure the island’s energy future, the three new facilities—4.4 MW in Larena, 6.6 MW in Lazi, and 6.8 MW in Siquijor—were fast-tracked after the Energy Regulatory Commission revoked the authority of Siquijor Island Power Corp. (SIPCOR) to operate due to multiple violations amid the continued power supply problems in the island province.
With a dependable capacity of 12.25 MW and a 1.7 MW reserve against Siquijor’s 9 MW peak demand, the project guarantees continuous and stable electricity for households and businesses.
The plants, built through the collaboration of National Electrification Administration (NEA), PROSIELCO, and the Cebu Electric Cooperative (CEBECO) I and III, and partner stakeholders, will reduce brownouts, improve system reliability, and spur local economic growth in Siquijor.
On Aug. 29, the Marcos administration ordered the shutdown of SIPCOR for its poor service in the Central Visayas island.
Marcos explained that they had to take over the operations because he has seen no improvement in their service despite issuing a warning to deliver a permanent fix to the intermittent power outages in the island province within six months, saying failure is not an option.
"We had to take over the operations of SIPCOR for the simple reason that wala tayong nakikitang improvement doon sa kanilang pag-provide ng supply ng kuryente kaya’t ganoon ang nangyari (we have not seen any improvement in their service to provide power supply which is why that happened)," Marcos said.
