Alex Eala turned back American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-3, to march into the quarterfinal of the Guadalajara 125 Open in the wee hours of Friday, Sept. 5 (Philippine time).
The suspension of the match due to heavy rain failed to dampen the spirit of the 20-year-old Eala as she took the first two games before stopping Lepchenko’s final hurrah in their Round-of-16 match.
Eala tangles with Italy’s Nicole Fossa Huergo in the quarterfinal after a brief rest. The latter carved out a 6-7(2), 6-0, 6-1 victory over Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa earlier.
This would be the first time that the two will clash on the court with Eala looking to have the advantage against her older Italian foe.
As of now, Eala continues to improve her spot in the elite list as she jumped to No. 70 in the WTA live rankings.
