ONCADA
DAVAO CITY – The Bangsamoro Youth Commission (BYC) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is demanding a public apology to the Muslim community from social media content creator Crist Briand Oncada following his insensitive remark on the concept of halal.
The BYC issued a statement on Thursday, Sept. 4, after Oncada posted “Looking for baboy na halal” on his Facebook account named “Crist Briand” on Sept. 2.
His post, which had already been removed, earned the ire of not just the Muslim community but also from other netizens.
The BYC pointed out that the content creator’s post was “offensive and disrespectful to the religious beliefs and cultural sensitivities of the Muslim community.”
On Sept. 3, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos in Davao region cried foul over the social media content creator as it reminded Oncada that there is no such thing as a baboy na halal.
“Under Islamic teachings, pork and all its derivatives are universally regarded as haram (forbidden)," NCMF-Davao said.
The BYC reminded social media content creators, including Oncada, that the youth could be influenced by insensitive and harmful content.
“Misrepresentations of faith, especially when trivialized or mocked, contribute to misunderstanding, discrimination, and cultural insensitivity,” the group said.
His Facebook account has 992,000 followers.
The BYC urged social media content creators and influencers to be responsible and exercise cultural sensitivity in their work.
It added public platforms must never be used to spread disinformation or content that disrespects religious beliefs and identities.
The Muslim Council of Elders South Cotabato urged the Muslim community to report Oncada’s account to Meta.
The group suggested that vloggers who insult religions and cultures should face legal consequences.
This was not the first time that Oncada’s content sparked controversy.
On the same day he posted the halal remark, he was
under fire from netizens, mostly from Koronadal City in South Cotabato, for climbing the city’s iconic roundball monument. Oncada publicly apology after he was summoned by local government officials.Last February, he posted a video while urinating on a poster of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy in front of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) compound here. The incident sparked outrage among KOJC members.
Atty. Israelito Torreon, who represented KOJC and Quiboloy, threatened to sue Oncada, who eventually issued a public apology.
Last Aug. 29, he posted a video of him taking a bath inside a comfort room of a mall in Digos City in Davao del Sur. He shared tips on how to take a bath there.
The mall management dismissed the stunt, saying that it was just for content purposes only. But it reminded the public not to emulate Oncada’s stunt since water inside the comfort rooms is intended for cleaning and flushing only since they are using recycled water.
