Sultan Kudarat governor backs lifestyle checks for gov't officials

DAVAO CITY – Sultan Kudarat Gov. Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu backed President R. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order for lifestyle checks on government officials.

Mangudadatu issued the statement following the controversy over flood control projects that dragged Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and government officials.
“I support the revival of lifestyle check programs for government officials and politicians. Their SALNs should be reviewed so we know whether their wealth is justified,” he said. “There is no problem with people getting rich. The problem is if they get rich from substandard projects funded by public money. That is something we must not ignore.”
The governor volunteered to undergo lifestyle check. “Unahin nyo po ako, walang problema (I’ll be first in line, no problem).”
He suggested that lifestyle checks should focus on mayors of the poorest towns in the country.
Mangudadatu said of the mayors in Maguindanao allegedly amassed unexplained wealth.
“Dahil ang aking question mark, dahil sila mayor, ng pinakamahirap na bayan pero sila ang pinakamayaman sa buong probinsya (My question is the mayor of the poorest town but is the richest in the province).”
Mangudadatu acknowledged that some government officials may have different business endeavors but sometimes their lifestyle tells a different story from what they do in public service.
He admitted that he is aware that some so-called influencers flaunt their luxurious lifestyles. “We must not practice crab mentality, but if their wealth comes at the expense of public money, we must be outraged and speak out.”
Mangudadatu recommended intensified checks and balances in all government offices.
The President’s order for lifestyle checks came following his recent visits to different flood control projects and defective government-funded projects in Luzon.
Marcos labeled the questionable flood-control projects as “economic sabotage,” saying projects intended to mitigate floods had instead caused physical damage and economic losses to communities.
