During the inspection, construction workers began demolition work, including the removal of establishments such as restaurants on the site.
In a media interview, Lopez said the construction had been delayed for over two years due to several legal issues.
“October pa ata ng 2022 nabigyan ng Notice to Proceed (NTP), kaso nung nagka-issue sa mga, of course, sa may-ari (The project was granted an NTP as early as October 2022, but issues with the owners caused delays), then we have to expropriate it,” he explained.
Lopez emphasized the importance of Ortigas Station as the second-largest station in the Metro Manila Subway.
“Napaka-importante po ng istasyon na ‘to sapagkat ito ay pangalawa yata ‘to sa pinakamalaking istasyon sa Subway natin. Dito rin magsasalubong yung tren—subway papuntang Mandaluyong saka Ortigas, at dito rin sinasabi nilang may turn pod (This station is very important as it is reportedly the second largest in our subway system. This is also where the train lines to Mandaluyong and Ortigas will meet, and it is said to have a turning point),” Lopez added.
“Siguradong maraming komyuter ang makikinabang dito lalo na’t marami ang nagta-trabaho dito sa business district ng Ortigas (Many commuters will surely benefit from this, especially since many people work here in the Ortigas business district),” the secretary added.
Meanwhile, Sotto expressed gratitude that construction has finally begun, thanking former Transportation Sec. Vince Dizon and Lopez for making it possible, even though it will not be completed during his term.
According to Lopez, the Ortigas Station is expected to be completed within three years and will become operational after an additional two years.
“Tuloy na tuloy na ang construction dito. Well, first yung demolition dito, wala nang mga major roadblocks, so we're very thankful, right? Sabi nga hindi siya matatapos sa loob ng term natin. Okay lang, ang importante nasimulan na at wala nang additional delays (Construction here is now underway. First, there is demolition, and there are no major roadblocks anymore, so we are very thankful. As mentioned, it will not be completed during our term, but that's okay. What matters is that it has started and there are no further delays,” Sotto said.
The mayor added that the local government will continue to assist and do everything possible to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.
“Kung may sumubok pang harangan o idelay pa ang proyekto, naka-ready lang kami rito para tumulong (If anyone tries to block or further delay the project, we are ready to assist),” Sotto continued.
