- In filing Senate Bill No. 1302 or the proposed Philippine Geriatric Center (PGC) Act, Sen. Risa Hontiveros sought to upgrade the current National Center for Geriatric Health in San Miguel, Manila into a tertiary hospital for the elderly.
Senator Risa Hontiveros filed anew the bill creating a specialty hospital for senior citizens saying they deserve to receive quality and age-appropriate healthcare.
In filing Senate Bill No. 1302 or the proposed Philippine Geriatric Center (PGC) Act, Hontiveros sought to upgrade the current National Center for Geriatric Health in San Miguel, Manila into a tertiary hospital for the elderly.
“It would be a great relief for our grandparents to have a specialized hospital that will focus on their health,” Hontiveros said.
“Our seniors need specialized care that is often not accessible to them because of the lack of capacity and facilities in health centers and public hospitals,” she stressed.
Once established, the senator said the PGC will promote medical services to the elderly and scientific research for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care, rehabilitation, and relief of diseases of seniors.
The measure also seeks to provide scholarships, incentives, and continuing professional development for healthcare workers specializing in geriatrics.
“We will also ensure that all seniors nationwide have access to the specialized care they need through the establishment of regional geriatric centers,” Hontiveros said.
The creation of the PGC also seeks to ensure there would be no shortage of doctors, nurses, officers, social workers, barangay health workers, and other medical and technical personnel in caring for the health of the elderly.
“Our grandparents are some of the people who have been our pillars of support as we grew up. Now that they are getting older and more susceptible to illnesses, let's also give them a reliable institution to monitor their health,” she said.
