Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party-list Rep. Robert Nazal has backed Vince Dizon's initial pronouncement as Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary, calling an "anti-corruption" move.
Dizon--who formally took over from just resigned--Manuel Bonoan on Tuesday, Sept. 2--vowed to impose a lifetime government ban on contractors found guilty of implementing "ghost" or substandard projects.
Nazal lauded DIzon's initiative, which he said sent "a clear message that corruption and incompetence in public works will no longer be tolerated".
“Every peso wasted on ghost or substandard projects is a peso stolen from the Filipino people. The lifetime ban on erring contractors is exactly the kind of accountability we need,” he said.
“Ang taumbayan ang nawawalan kapag may anomalya. Kaya dapat ipakita ng DPWH na handa itong baguhin ang sistema at ibalik ang tiwala ng publiko (It’s the people who lose out whenever there are anomalies. That’s why the DPWH must show that it is ready to reform the system and restore public trust,” Nazal said.
Clean slate
All eyes on Dizon right now, particularly on how he will address the massive allegations of corruption in connection with certain flood mitigation projects.
Dizon has also ordered the courtesy resignation of all DPWH officials “from top to bottom”--a move that former BH Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera lauded.
She said this would pave the way for a merit-based and transparent DPWH leadership.
“The DPWH handles some of the biggest slices of our national budget. Requiring the resignation of all top officials is a bold but necessary step to rebuild integrity and restore public trust,” Herrera said.
“We support this clean slate approach, because only through decisive action can the agency deliver on its mandate to build infrastructure that truly serves the people,” she continued.
BH Party-list stressed that the reforms should not only punish wrongdoers but also create a culture of accountability that ensures future projects—whether roads, bridges, or flood-control systems—are completed to the highest standards.
