Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso has announced plans to redevelop and revive the Manila Skate Park, a long-awaited project eagerly anticipated by the city's youth and skateboarding community.
The announcement follows growing calls from local skaters for the restoration of a dedicated space for the sport, especially after the demolition of the Canonigo Sports Complex, formerly known as the Manila Skate Park, along Quirino Avenue Extension in Paco.
During a meeting last Saturday, Mayor Domagoso raised the idea of rebuilding the skate park to Manila 5th District Representative Irwin Tieng, who has since expressed full support for the project.
"'Yung mga atabs kung saan-saan nag-iiskate. Baka puwede natin ibalik ‘yung skate park kasi kawawa naman (The kids are skating just about anywhere. Maybe we can bring back the skate park, because it’s really unfortunate for them)," he said, expressing concern over young skaters having no safe, designated space to practice.
Domagoso emphasized that the planned redevelopment seeks to provide a secure and productive venue for young skaters, promoting not just physical activity, but also creativity, self-expression, and community engagement.
He said that with the renewed support from both local government leaders and the community, the rebirth of the Manila Skate Park marks a significant step in building a more inclusive and empowering environment for Manila’s youth.
He added that the project is also part of the city’s broader commitment to youth and sports development.
