Contrabands that could be used as deadly weapons were seized during a Greyhound operation inside the male dormitory of the Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City on Monday, Sept. 1.
Jail Senior Insp. Juniven Rey Umadhay, spokesperson of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR), said the operation was conducted at 4:30 a.m. to flush out contrabands inside the jail facility, following intelligence reports and verified information indicating that Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) were in possession of unauthorized items, including smartphones.
During the inspection, jail authorities were able to confiscate improvised bladed weapons, heater equipment, pointed steel bars, and improvised bats. “These are very dangerous weapons that could endanger PDLs and the personnel,” Umadhay said in a phone interview on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
The contrabands were presented to Jail Chief Supt. Brendan Fulgencio, BJMP-NIR director, at the regional office here.
The operation was conducted four days after the PDLs held a noise barrage calling for the removal of warden Jail Chief Insp. Crisyrel Awe over alleged mistreatment.
Umadhay said that the operation was also conducted to confiscate smartphones, after a video showing the PDLs’ protest inside the jail circulated online. “It cannot be denied that two to three PDLs have access to smartphones,” he added.
He stressed the necessity of the operation to clear the jail of any contraband that could harm anyone inside the facility.
Umadhay said that they are doubling their efforts to probe and gather intelligence information that could help them eliminate such devices. “There might be leaks even from the inside, thus we are probing a possible connivance,” he added.
He said that they will look into all factors to determine how these contrabands sneak into the facility. He said that these were thrown over the perimeter wall.
Umadhay said that the NODJ under the leadership of officer-in-charge Jail Senior Insp. Raymond Aro is considered a high-risk jail in the region because big drug personalities and those linked to the communist insurgency are detained in the facility.
He said that the seven-hour operation ended peacefully at 11 a.m. with no untoward incidents, as the PDLs fully cooperated.
The BJMP-NIR said that Greyhound operations are part of their continuous campaign to ensure the safety, discipline, and security inside jail facilities.
