Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima is urging other Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials--particularly those who have something to say on the flood control projects mess--to follow erstwhile secretary Manuel Bonoan's lead and resign.
"Kung may natitira pang kahihiyan at konsensya ang iba pang opisyal ng DPWH na sangkot o hinayaan lang ang mga kalokohang ito, magresign na rin sila at sabihin ang mga nalalaman nila. Pero kailangan din nilang humarap sa pananagutan," De Lima said on Sunday night, Aug. 31.
(If there is any shame and conscience left among other DPWH officials who were involved in or simply allowed these shenanigans, they should also resign and reveal what they know. But they must also face accountability.)
It was Sunday afternoon when news of Bonoan's resignation broke out. He was promptly replaced by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon.
"We welcome the resignation of Sec. Manuel Bonoan, even though he said yesterday that “Hindi pagre-resign at pag-iwas sa responsibilidad ang solusyon (Resignation and avoiding one's responsibility is not the solution)," said De Lima.
The former senator said Bonoan's resignation was necessary to give way to an impartial investigation and much- needed reform in the DPWH. "But it does not also absolve him from accountability in the anomalous flood control projects under his watch," she noted.
"People are watching. Pagod at galit na ang taumbayan sa paulit-ulit na pagbaha at walang katapusang pandarambong sa kaban ng bayan. Hindi uubra ang PR lang dito. Hindi pwede ang mga substandard lang din na imbestigasyon na basta lang din guguho at paglilipasan ng panahon hanggang magkalimutan na naman."
(The people are tired and angry over the recurring floods and the endless plunder of public funds. Public relations alone won’t cut it. Substandard investigations that will eventually collapse and be forgotten over time are also unacceptable.)
What's needed according to De Lima is concrete and unwhitewashed results in the investigation on the flood control projects controversy.
"Dapat may mapanagot at mapakulong sa mga nagsabwatan at ginawang gatasang baka ng kanilang kasakiman, hindi lang ang flood control projects, kundi ang iba pang proyekto at programa ng gobyerno," she said.
(Those who conspired and turned flood control projects and other government programs into cash cows for their greed must be held accountable and imprisoned.)
