The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) activated 42 disaster response group (DRG) teams on Monday, Sept. 1, as a low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon (habagat) threaten to bring heavy rains and possible flooding to parts of the country.
The teams are composed of 335 personnel from the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) who are fully equipped to conduct search and rescue operations.
The PCG also placed on standby several land and water assets for swift response.
These include the BRP Malamawi which is a fast patrol boat, three high-speed response boats, five aluminum boats, two rubber boats, a jet ski, 10 land vehicles, and 16 motorcycles.
“All Coast Guard Stations have also been directed to coordinate with their respective Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) for synchronized and comprehensive deployment of DRG Teams and equipment,” said Commander Philipps Soria, commander of CGDSEM.
The LPA was located 570 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 695 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte as of 3 a.m. on Monday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Habagat, on the other hand, was affecting the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas, and the northern section of Mindanao.
