Cops seize 1,000 SIM cards as PNP steps up drive vs scammers

Agents of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group seized around 1,000 pieces of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards following the arrest of two people in an entrapment operation in Imus, Cavite.
PNP-ACG director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang said the two arrested suspects have been involved in buy-and-sell of SIM cards, explaining that they would buy SIM cards at P15 each and sell them at P20 each online.
"Our operatives arrested the two suspects in an entrapment operation. The SIM cards seized are possibly being used for text blaster machines," Yang told reporters.
“The illegal sale of registered SIM cards undermines our efforts to trace and prevent cybercrimes. These cards often end up in the hands of scammers and fraudsters," he added.
Yang said they are now coordinating with various telecom companies in the conduct of their investigation regarding the sale of SIM cards.
Both suspects are facing charges for violation of Section 7 of RA No. 11934 (SIM Registration Act of 2022) in relation to Section 6 of RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012).
"We call on the public to support the enforcement of the SIM Registration Act by refusing to participate in these illegal activities and reporting violators to the nearest ACG office," Yang said.
The two suspects were among the 40 people arrested in a weeklong operation—from Aug. 22 to 28, for violations of cybercrime law.
Of those arrested, Yang said 34 were caught in entrapment operations while six were wanted persons tracked down in separate anti-cybercrime efforts.
