Cardinal David on Fr. Villanueva receiving Ramon Magsaysay award: 'A fitting servant-leader for Asia'

Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David lauded Fr. Flaviano “Flavie” Villanueva for being named one of the 2025 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees, calling him “a fitting servant-leader to inspire Asia and the world.”
In a statement on Sunday, Aug. 31, Cardinal David congratulated and highlighted the significance of Fr. Villanueva’s ministry.
“This recognition affirms his prophetic ministry among the poor, especially his courageous work of giving dignity to victims of extrajudicial killings and their families, and his tireless advocacy for human rights, justice, and compassion,” Cardinal David said.
He also emphasized how Fr. Villanueva’s work exemplifies the Church’s social teachings and the Gospel.
“His witness embodies the spirit of the Church’s social teachings and the Gospel call to uphold the sacredness of life,” Cardinal David said.
“The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation could not have chosen a more fitting servant-leader to inspire Asia and the world with faith that acts in love,” he added.
Fr. Villanueva’s mission includes providing psychological, spiritual, and material assistance to victims of extrajudicial killings and their families, helping restore dignity and hope amid difficult circumstances.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s highest honor, has recognized individuals and organizations whose selfless service uplifts lives and communities since 1958.
This year’s awardees also include Shaahina Ali of the Maldives, honored for marine conservation efforts, and Educate Girls from India, recognized for empowering rural girls through education.
The 67th Ramon Magsaysay Awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 7, at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila.
