Ronald Tubid is set to make his PBA coaching debut after being named head coach of Terrafirma, replacing Raymond Tiongco, who served as head coach on an interim basis.
Tiongco took over for the past two conferences following the departure of former head coach Johnedel Cardel.
A PBA great who previously served as the team’s manager after a 16-year playing career, Tubid now takes the helm of a Terrafirma squad that has committed to staying in the league for its 50th season despite two failed attempts to sell the franchise last year.
His appointment came just a week after the PBA lifted the trade moratorium on Terrafirma, which promptly dealt the rights to Javi Gomez de Liano to Magnolia in exchange for Jerrick Ahanmisi.
Tubid also previously suited up for the Dyip franchise as part of the Christian Standhardinger trade in 2017. Over the course of his career, he won nine championships while playing for Shell, Air21, Ginebra, Barako Bull, and San Miguel.
The 43-year-old Tubid, known during his playing days as a hard-nosed defender, will face his first major task as head coach when he selects the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 PBA Draft.
Leading the Dyip, however, poses a tough challenge for the first-time head coach, especially after the team lost key players to free agency. Last season’s leading scorer Stanley Pringle has already signed with Rain or Shine, while Terrence Romeo recently became an unrestricted free agent.
