Speaking before hundreds of attendees at the Del Pilar Shrine in Barangay San Nicolas, Bulakan, Fernando said that Bulacan should not be associated with corruption, particularly the so-called “ghost flood control projects,” but rather be known as a province where public servants uphold honesty and prioritize the welfare of every Bulakenyo family.
The event, held Saturday, August 30, carried the theme “Inspirasyon ng Kabataan sa Matatag na Kinabukasan” and attended by guests from government, civil society, and media.
Fernando called on the country’s journalists to investigate not only the flood control projects but other irregularities, to expose the truth, and uphold the values championed by Del Pilar.
Echoing Del Pilar's legacy, the governor urged them to condemn corruption, defend the oppressed, and prove that truth is more powerful than falsehood.
He assured that the provincial government remains committed to combating corruption and promoting compassionate, accountable governance.
“Del Pilar reminds us that true leadership is not measured by power or wealth, but by sincere service to the people,” Fernando said.
DEL PILAR’S RELEVANCE
Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, who served as guest of honor, led the wreath-laying ceremony and delivered a keynote address emphasizing Del Pilar’s enduring relevance.
She encouraged the youth to draw inspiration from his life in their role as nation-builders.
Lazaro noted that as editor of La Solidaridad, Del Pilar championed government and social reforms to uplift the Filipino people.
She reminded everyone that Del Pilar’s weapon was not a gun or a sword, but language and words—tools that encourage vigilance, critical thinking, and truthfulness.
“Like Plaridel,” she said, “we should not be afraid to use our voice, abilities, and intelligence for the benefit of every citizen.”
Most Worshipful Raul E. Canon Jr., Grand Master of the Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines, also paid tribute to Del Pilar, expressing hope that his patriotic life story would continue to inspire future generations.
The ceremony was attended by Bulakan Mayor Vergel Meneses, Vice Mayor Aaron Ronald R. Cruz, Board Member Romina Fermin, representatives from the offices of Vice Governor Alex Castro and the Sangguniang Bayan, Sangguniang Kabataan, Sangguniang Barangay, the Bulacan Police led by Col. Angel Garcillano, educators from public and private schools, Del Pilar’s descendants, members of the National Press Club, and local media.
In accordance with Republic Act No. 7449, passed on April 27, 1992, August 30 is declared a special non-working holiday in Bulacan to honor the birth of Gat Marcelo H. Del Pilar, a Bulakenyo hero and Great Propagandist who championed reform and freedom through his writings in La Solidaridad.
