2 men held for guns, drugs in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two men were arrested while their companion escaped during an operation against illegal firearms and drugs in Purok 4, Barangay Boheyakan, Lamitan City, Basilan province, on Thursday, Aug. 28.
The operation was based on a search warrant targeting Jovie delos Santos for violation of Republic Act 9165, the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Delos Santos managed to evade capture and is currently at large.
Police apprehended Issaw Liyanson Dailun, 24, from Barangay Semmut, Akbar town, Basilan, and Rojahn Alampay Marcelino, 22, of Barangay Boheyakan.
Several firearms and ammunition and illegal drugs were seized from the suspects.
The suspects and pieces of evidence are in custody of the Lamitan police station for documentation.
They will undergo medical and drug testing at the Provincial Forensic Unit (PFU) while the confiscated drugs will be submitted for laboratory examination.
Meanwhile, two logistics personnel were arrested in a police checkpoint for transporting suspected smuggled cigarettes on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Zamboanga City.
Authorities intercepted a wing van on Veterans Ave. Extension containing cartons of cigarettes.
The cigarettes lacked the necessary tax stamps and labels from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and worth an estimated P1.2 million.
The suspects, identified by their aliases Egin, 49, and JP, 34, were employees of a logistics company.
Charges have been filed against them for violating Republic Act No. 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings Law, and Republic Act No. 10863, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
The suspects and pieces of evidence are police custody for proper documentation and disposition.
