Deputy Speaker Antipolo City 1st district Rep. Ronaldo "Ronnie" Puno has advised Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo "Pulong" Duterte and Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte to set their feelings aside and "accept" the House Infrastructure Committee's (infra comm) upcoming probe on the city's flood control projects.
Speaking in a press conference Friday, Aug. 29, Puno said it was incumbent upon the two to let such investigation happen.
"Kung public official ka, di ba, siguro tanggapin mo lahat ng klaseng pag-iimbestiga eh, di ba? Kasama yan sa trabaho eh (If you're a public official, right, you should probably accept all kinds of investigations, right? That's part of the job)," Puno said, when asked about the Duterte brothers' criticism on the inquiry.
"At kung gusto mong patunayan na maayos yung gawa mo, bakit hindi ka papayag na tignan nila lahat, di ba? Ganun lang yun (And if you really want to prove that you performed your job well, why would you prohibit them from looking at everything? It's that simple)," said the House leader.
"Kaya bilang mga tagapaglingkod ng ating gobyerno, eh wag na tayo magtampo kung titignan yung ating mga project dun (So as public servants, let’s not take offense if our projects there are being looked into)," added Puno.
Earlier, Mayor Duterte branded the infra comm inquiry as a mere PR stunt. On the other hand, Rep. Duterte said the joint panel should "not mind the floods in Davao", since he "can guarantee everybody that every peso allocated was implemented".
Last year, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirmed that P51 billion was allocated to infrastructure projects in the district of Davao City from 2020 to 2022. This was during the tail end of the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
At any rate, Puno said the infra comm wasn't "singling out" Davao City in relation to the flood control projects controversy.
"Hindi lang naman Davao City din, in fairness, ang imbestigahan ng committee...as of now, ang alam ko marami silang areas. Hindi lang yan. Lahat ng mga binanggit ni Senator [Panfilo] Lacson, I'm sure pupuntahan nila yun...bahala na lang sila mag announce niyan. Hindi naman nila sini-single out ang Davao City."
(In fairness, it’s not just Davao City that the committee is investigating… as far as I know, they have many areas lined up. It’s not just that. I’m sure they’ll go to all the places Senator Lacson mentioned… it’s up to them to announce it. They’re not singling out Davao City.)
There's also the possibility that the Duterte brothers--as stewards of Davao--could end up earning brownie points based on the findings of the joint panel.
"Baka maganda yun, eh di mapuri pa sila, di ba? (The probe might turn out well and lead to them getting praised, right?)" the National Unity Party (NUP) chairman said.
The infra comm will begin its probe on Sept. 2.
