The Manila Police District (MPD) said demolition teams were blocked when residents put up makeshift barricades made of scrap materials and connected iron sheets, causing a delay.
This led to a tense discussion between authorities and residents asking for explanations.
The affected area is a private lot measuring 856 square meters, where approximately 1,000 families reside.
Residents emphasized that relocation assistance is not applicable since the property is privately owned, and they expressed frustration over the lack of prior consultation.
During the confrontation, Manila 2nd District Councilor Darwin Sia arrived and had a heated discussion with both the police and the court sheriff.
The incident caused heavy traffic along Abad Santos Avenue heading to Divisoria.
Authorities advised motorists to take alternative routes while police managed the crowd and ensured the demolition team’s safety.
No serious injuries have been reported, as of this time. Although some residents and officers sustained minor scratches from debris.
