The Samahang Industriya ng Agricultura (SINAG) urged the Department of Agriculture to explain what it described as delayed distribution of fertilizer subsidies to farmers who are still recovering from the effects of a series of typhoons earlier this year.
SINAG chairman Rosendo So said the delays may be a result of fictitious deliveries, which is particularly distressing for farmers who are still struggling to overcome the devastating impact of the typhoons and calamities that occurred earlier this year.
In a recent Senate hearing, So raised concerns about the potential existence of 'ghost deliveries' of the subsidies following reports from farmers in various regions who have not yet received the vital support from the government that was supposed to be distributed in June, which coincides with the start of the planting season.
In the hearing, So revealed that there was delay in fertilizer deliveries to Region 1 or Ilocos Region, Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), and the MIMAROPA region consisting of Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan.
So said he had previously sought an explanation from the DA regarding the delay in the subsidy, which was expected to be released in time for the June planting season.
He expressed disappointment that while some regions have received their fertilizer subsidy, others have not.
“As we approach the end of August, there's still no fertilizer subsidy for certain regions, which is causing frustration. Some farming areas have already received their subsidy, so it's concerning why others haven't. What might be the reason for this delay in providing the subsidy to these regions?” said So.
He also drew attention to the contrast between this year and last year, when the timely release of the fertilizer subsidy coincided with a competitive price for palay.
Despite the decrease in palay prices this year, the SINAG chairman said the subsidy has yet to reach the farmers.
“There should be no issues with the distribution of the fertilizers, as contracts for the fertilizers were secured in May,” said So, as he emphasized the importance of timely delivery of the subsidy to support farmers.
Earlier two local executives in Northern Luzon heavily reliant on agriculture have sought SINAG's assistance to expedite the delayed fertilizer subsidy.
