Valenzuela gov't clears 2 waterways, 9 others undergoing cleanup

The Valenzuela City government has completed the dredging of two major waterways and continues its cleanup of nine other waterways as part of its large-scale flood control program.
According to the City Public Information Office, Paso de Blas Creek near the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Ilang-ilang Creek in Barangay Maysan have been cleared of accumulated waste and debris.
It added that 53 cubic meters of garbage were hauled from Paso de Blas, while about 460 cubic meters were collected from Ilang-ilang.
The cleanup operations are part of the 11 priority waterways being addressed through PANATAG: Valenzuela’s Flood Control Resilience Initiatives, launched on Aug. 23 in partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and NLEX Corporation.
As part of the initiative, the city signed an agreement with the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute and NOAH Center to craft a new Urban Drainage Master Plan.
The plan includes the construction of a 780-meter water catchment basin in Barangay Dalandanan, the upgrading of nine pumping stations, and the establishment of a Flood Control Advisory Council.

Cleanup operations are ongoing in the nine remaining creeks, including Caingin Creek in Tugatog, identified as one of the most challenging sites because of its size and heavy waste buildup.
Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian along with DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, representatives from DPWH, and NLEX Corporation conducted a site visit on Wednesday, Aug. 27, to assess progress and identify challenges in the cleanup operations.
During the visit, Dizon also discussed the site development of the PANATAG Water Catchment in Barangay Dalandanan, expressing his support for its immediate completion.
He added that additional funding and equipment may be required to speed up dredging and waste hauling in the area.
Aside from dredging, the local government is also conducting regular drainage declogging and cleanup operations through Oplan Balik Linis Ganda and Task Force Kalinisan.
These include defogging, vegetation clearing, structure demolition, and cable management in all 33 barangays.
The city government said that currently, nine pumping stations are being upgraded to bolster flood response capacity, ensuring the city’s flood control measures remain effective during typhoons and high-rainfall events.
Gatchalian said the combined short-term cleanups and long-term flood resilience projects are meant to reduce the risks of severe flooding during the rainy season while ensuring that preventive measures are sustained in the years ahead.
