DAVAO CITY – Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said he prefers Singapore’s Changi Airport to take over the Davao International Airport operations through a public-private partnership.
In a recent interview with Alvin & Tourism at The Hague, Netherlands, after he visited his father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Mayor Duterte said Changi Airport has the edge given its global reputation.
“I think it would be better to choose Changi Airport. I have no issue with the other two groups, but Changi’s expertise is building and running airports,” Mayor Duterte said.
Filinvest is more into property development, the acting mayor said. “Gokongwei Group has airlines, but if you look at Singapore, their airport is one of the best in the world.”
Changi Airport of Singapore is widely regarded as one of the world’s top airports, recently ranked second to Istanbul Airport by Travel and Tour World.
Mayor Duterte, however, stressed that the final decision rests with the national government. “If Changi is really interested, I hope they get considered. But ultimately, it’s not a local decision,” he said.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon earlier confirmed that three companies – Filinvest, Gokongwei, and Changi Airport – have expressed interest by submitting proposals to manage the facility.
Dizon also disclosed that the Filinvest Group has already submitted an unsolicited proposal to develop, operate, and maintain the airport.
“It’s about time. Among our major international gateways, only Davao airport remains under government operation. The private sector is already running Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Clark, and Mactan,” he said.
DIA is the third busiest airport in the Philippines, following NAIA and Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
Dizon expressed optimism that the proposals would be approved before the end of the year.
