BACOLOD CITY – The City Health Office (CHO) reported a 12.9 percent decrease in dengue cases here, but logged another fatality, bringing the total to five this year, as of Aug. 16.
A four-year-old boy from Barangay Villamonte is the latest dengue fatality in this highly-urbanized city.
The victim experienced intermittent fever, associated with abdominal pain and vomiting, for four days since Aug. 10, according to the CHO.
Due to persistent symptoms, he was brought to a doctor for consultation and was advised for hospital admission on Aug. 14 due to severe dengue.
He died the following day, due to dengue shock syndrome, the CHO reported.
A total of 743 dengue cases have been recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 16, a 110 drop from last year’s 853 cases and three deaths during the same period.
Barangay Mansilingan topped the list with 78 cases, followed by Taculing, 61; Tangub, 48; Estefania, 47; Vista Alegre, 44; Alijis, 40; Villamonte, 37; Mandalagan, 36; Sum-ag, 32, and Barangay 1, 31.
Pediatric cases make up a significant portion of the total, with 519 cases affecting children and teens, 305 in the one to 10 age group, 201 ages 11 to 19, and 13 cases in infants under one-year-old.
The CHO reported the first dengue fatality in February, a 64-year-old man from Barangay Alijis, followed by 42-year-old woman from Barangay Mansilingan in April, and two in July, a six-year-old girl from Barangay Handumanan and a five-year-old boy from Barangay Vista Alegre.
