BACOLOD CITY – A total of 106 families were evacuated and classes were suspended in some areas in southern Negros Occidental due to flood from heavy rain caused by a low-pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon or ‘’habagat.’’
As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that 43 families or 126 persons were displaced in Barangays 1 and Dancalan in Ilog town; 11 families composed of 34 individuals in Barangay Guiljungan, Cauayan town, and 52 families or 110 persons in Barangay Gil Montilla and Mambaroto in Sipalay City.
Irene Bel Ploteña, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD), said there were families who were evacuated in Sipalay City and Ilog on Tuesday, Aug. 26, due to isolated flooding in their areas.
Ploteña said that a rockslide occurred in Barangay 4, Sipalay City and the road has been cleared and passable as of Wednesday morning.
The soil surrounding a river in Sipalay City eroded due to intense rain the past days, according to Ploteña. She added that the local government is assessing the river’s condition to determine the necessary preventive measure.
She said that the PDRRMO is on heightened monitoring.
Classes on all levels in 12 local government units (LGUs) were suspended on Wednesday as a precautionary measure due to heavy rain and flood – La Castellana, Hinigaran, Hinoba-an, Candoni, Ilog, Cauayan, Isabela, Moises Padilla, and Binalbagan, and the cities of Kabankalan, Sipalay, and Himamaylan.
