Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso issued an urgent call for accountability in the city’s flood control and waste management efforts in the wake of rising cases of leptospirosis in the city.
In a meeting with department heads and bureau directors, Domagoso expressed his frustration over several flood control projects that have failed to yield results despite a massive P14 billion budget allocation.
He said the persistence of flooding in various parts of the city not only disrupts daily life but has also been identified as a key contributor to the rise in leptospirosis cases, a disease spread through contaminated floodwaters.
“Tayo ang may pinakamalaking flood control, P14 billion, at tayo rin ang pinakabaha na siyudad (We have the biggest flood control budget, P14 billion, and yet we are still the most flooded city)."
“Every now and then, kawawa naman ang mga taga-Maynila. Sad to say (Every now and then, the people of Manila suffer. Sad to say)."
He also pointed to political interference as a root cause of these failures, warning that the city government will soon disclose the names of lawmakers allegedly involved in mishandling or manipulating these infrastructure projects.
