Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso announced that all garbage collected in the city will now be transported to the New San Mateo Sanitary Landfill in Rizal starting August 27, following the closure of the Navotas Sanitary Landfill.
To ensure uninterrupted garbage collection, the city has deployed new hauling trucks that will serve as transfer vehicles.
These larger trucks will collect waste from smaller garbage trucks and transport it directly to the San Mateo landfill.
Domagoso assured residents during a demonstration of the new system.
He emphasized that the goal is to keep smaller trucks free to roam city streets and collect waste without being delayed by long landfill trips.
Domagoso also reminded residents to be patient and avoid leaving garbage on the streets if collection trucks haven't arrived yet.
“Mas hahaba ang biyahe, mas babagal (The trips will take longer, and the process will be slower),” he explained.
He reminded residents not to bring out their garbage if the trucks haven’t arrived yet, and instead wait for proper collection schedules coordinated by their barangay officials
The mayor acknowledged that the longer travel to Rizal may cause minor delays of one to two hours, but stressed that public welfare remains the priority.
