J Rey Soul comes back home with Black Eyed Peas for the SM MOA Arena show
Global music fans may know the Black Eyed Peas for their anthems and electrifying performances, but behind the beats lies the remarkable story of the group’s youngest member, J Rey Soul.
Born Jessica Reynoso, J Rey Soul grew up in Laguna with dreams of singing on the world stage. That dream took a decisive turn when she was discovered by apl.de.ap on The Voice Philippines. Reflecting on that moment, she shared: “Apl believed in me, connected me to will.i.am and we were like kindred spirits. At first, it felt unreal joiningsuch a legendary group! I was nervous, but excited to show that a Black Filipina like me can be on the world stage
Her entry into the Black Eyed Peas came at a pivotal time, stepping into the role once held by Fergie. The comparisons, she admits, were daunting. “I was only 20, fresh from Laguna - imagine the responsibility? The hardest part was the comparisons,” she said. “But God prepared me. I focused on my own strengths and what I could bring. Fergie even sent me the sweetest supportive message, which gave me confidence.”
Beyond the spotlight, J Rey Soul recalls that her true integration into the group wasn’t just about performing. “You don’t just feel like family on stage. It’s the kwentuhan, dinners, exploring cities together, even Disneyland! That’s when I knew I wasn’t just performing with them, I was really part of the family.”
Her most unforgettable moment so far came when she performed with the Peas in front of Beyoncé. “She’s someone I’ve always looked up to. I cried for a week. It reminded me how much God has blessed me — I’ve been living my dream.”
Since joining the group, J Rey Soul has been part of milestones that bridge cultures and genres. Her collaboration with the Peas on “Mamacita” alongside Ozuna has surpassed 200 million Spotify streams and amassed over 500 million combined views and plays worldwide. She has also been recognized in Hollywood-based music and entertainment awards for her contributions to global pop culture.
But beyond numbers and accolades, J Rey Soul's artistry carries a deeper meaning: representation. As a Black Filipina, she proudly raises the Philippine flag on the global stage, showing that talent knows no borders.
“I’m proud I could add value to the group while building my own journey. Dreams really do come true,” she said.
This week, J Rey Soul is back in the Philippines for a show that promises to be both spectacular and personal. Together with apl.de.ap, she will share the stage with will.i.am and Taboo in an electrifying Manila concert that will feature the group's iconic hits, chart-toppers, and a celebration of Filipino pride.
Only 27 years young and full of promise. J Rey Soul wants everyone to know that her story is more than just about music. It is about resilience, representation, and faith. As she continues to blend her soulful energy with the legacy of the legendary Black Eyed Peas, she is also proving that she can be a legacy of her own - a living inspiration to Filipinos about conquering the world, one song at a time.
