Members of the House of Representatives expressed shock and exasperation Tuesday, Aug. 26 over the sudden sacking of General Nicolas Torre III as Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
Akabayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña took to X to express his surprise, especially since a completely different topic had been dominating local news the past few weeks.
"Yung mga sangkot sa flood control dapat ang sibakin pero Chief PNP ang tinanggal. Anyare? (Those involved in the flood control [issue] were the ones who should have been axed, and yet the Chief PNP was the one removed. What happened?)" Cendaña, a member of the minority, wrote.
Equally perplexed by Torre's removal as PNP head honcho was Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima, also of the minority bloc.
"What's happening?! They better have a good reason in doing that to a very popular, much appreciated and high-performing PNP Chief!" De Lima said in her own X post.
In a joint statement, Makabayan bloc solons ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co said that Torre's removal from his post after serving a mere 85 days was "unmistakable evidence of escalating internal conflicts and systemic breakdown within the Marcos administration".
They said Torre's open confrontation with Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Remulla regarding unauthorized personnel changes "exposes serious divisions within the administration's law enforcement machinery".
“We urge the Filipino people to look past these internal power struggles and concentrate on pressing concerns," Tinio said.
