(UPDATED)
Classes at all levels in public and private schools as well as government work were suspended in Metro Manila and 19 other provinces on Tuesday, Aug. 26, due to inclement weather.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Sec. Jonvic Remulla announced the development on Monday, Aug. 25.
Aside from Metro Manila, classes and work were also suspended in Aurora, Quezon, Rizal, Laguna, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte,
Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Batangas, and Cavite were also included in the list as of 6:48 p.m.
“Ayon sa PAGASA, hassle ang panahon bukas. Apat na na araw kayong pahinga, dagdag pa ng isa (According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, the weather would be hassle tomorrow. You have been resting for four days already, let’s add one more),” he said in a post on the official Facebook page of the DILG.
The Interior secretary also quipped that the tone of his announcement was already serious.
“Oh ayan, serious na ang dating ko. No joke! No joke talaga! (Now I sound more serious. No joke. It’s really no joke!) Keep safe everyone,” added Remulla, who had previously been criticized in the past for supposedly using a joking tone when announcing serious matters.
Some took advantage of the long weekend starting from Saturday to Monday, a regular holiday as the nation commemorated National Heroes Day, by resting at home and spending time with family and friends, while others went on vacation.
The southwest monsoon (habagat) is affecting parts of the country, bringing rains that cause floods and other hazards such as landslides in vulnerable areas.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) earlier cautioned the public from going out of their homes as the new low pressure area (LPA) was at 290 kilometers northeast of Maasin City, Southern Leyte or 130 km east, northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar.
