One scroll through Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms reveals an empowered generation known as Generation Z, or Gen Z. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Gen Z as “the group of people who were born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s,” following the Millennials.
We know Gen Zs for a multitude of reasons, but first things first—no generation is perfect, right?
It is an indisputable fact that Gen Zs have grown up immersed in modern technology, smartphones, and the internet. This digital upbringing not only brings convenience but also allows for vicarious indulgence in the vast array of events the contemporary world has to offer.
In today’s technological era, Gen Zs find comfort and a platform in the digital sphere, rich with information and opportunities. This generation possesses more than just a dependency on screens: it is also informed by the right knowledge at the right time.
Often labeled as “lost in constant vulnerability,” “emotionally sensitive,” and “tech-savvy,” Gen Zs channel their vulnerability into building communities, carrying liberal views, and amplifying voices as well as awareness of social issues they believe matter in today's society.
In reality, they not only consume content, but also actively create it and advocate for change. This generation is simply empowered. Yllana Marie Aduana, who belongs to Gen Z and crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2023, said it right: “Although misconstrued as very ardent, I would have to say that we use our voices for a reason, and that is to always speak up for the things that we know are right and for the things that we know we deserve. That is why we are very ardent about it.”
Beyond their tech-savviness lies a deeper purpose: harnessing the profound influence of digital platforms. They champion causes such as youth and women's empowerment, participate in political campaigns, initiate donation drives during crises, and offer fresh, insightful perspectives.
Moreover, Gen Zs are preparing to outnumber Millennials and become the largest demographic in the global workforce, making their presence impossible to ignore. Describing their psyche to older generations, who may raise eyebrows over their perceived extravagance, is both a righteous challenge and, perhaps, a provocative invitation to understand a generation shaped by connectivity, awareness, and boundless digital possibility.
It is also nice to note that Gen Zs do not necessarily share the same thinking as their parents or ancestors, which often leads to generational tension and contradictory perspectives on issues, particularly social ones.
In conclusion, while opinions about Gen Z vary, every generation has its strengths and challenges. Instead of focusing on the negatives, let's recognize their potential and hope for a brighter future.
