Marcos hails Alex Eala's historic US Open breakthrough

Eala stunned 14th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark in the first round of the US Open in New York, rallying from a 1-5 deficit in the deciding set to complete a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11) upset victory.

President Marcos congratulated tennis star Alex Eala after she became the first Filipino to win a singles match at a Grand Slam tournament in the Open era, saying the tennis heroine was only just beginning.

“She’s only getting started! Congratulations, Alex! Kasama mo ang buong Pilipinas sa bawat laban mo (The whole Philippines is with you in every battle),” he said in a Facebook post on Monday, Aug. 25.

“Sama-sama naming isisigaw sa mundo ang galing ng Pilipino (Together we will show the world the greatness of the Filipino)!” he added.

Eala stunned 14th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark in the first round of the US Open in New York, rallying from a 1-5 deficit in the deciding set to complete a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11) upset victory.

The 20-year-old will advance to the second round of a Grand Slam singles tournament for the first time, continuing her rise in the professional circuit.
