Former Gabriela Party-list representative Arlene Brosas pressed for the immediate extradition of embattled televangelist Apollo Quiboloy to the United States (US) as well as the rollout of his cases in the Philippines as she cited the many allegations of abuse on women and children, which he was able to evade in the past.
Brosas said authorities have nothing to wait for anymore as his victims have long been waiting for justice.
"Paulit-ulit na binasura at pinagtakpan ang mga kaso dahil sa kapit niya sa mga nasa kapangyarihan, lalo na sa mga Duterte. Overdue na ang pananagutan at dapat na itong aksyunan (The cases were repeatedly dismissed and covered up because of his connections with those in power, especially the Dutertes. Accountability is long overdue and must be acted upon)," Brosas claimed.
Brosas believed Quiboloy's long trail of cases "shows how impunity reigned in for years".
In particular, the prosecutor's office in Davao City where the Dutertes have a stronghold, dismissed the charges against the self-proclaimed "Appointed Son of God".
But a year later, a US federal court indicted him on the charges, and the Fedeeql Bureau of Investigation (FBI) listed him among its most wanted fugitives.
It was only in March 2024 when the Department of Justice (DOJ) overturned the Davao prosecutors’ decision. This was followed by the Davao Regional Trial Court’s (RTC) issuance of an arrest warrant against Quiboloy on April 3, 2024.
Quiboloy was eventually arrested in September 2024.
“Bagamat may kaso siya sa parehong US at Pilipinas, walang puwang para sa palusot. Dapat gumulong ang hustisya sa dalawang bansa. Ang mahalaga ay harapin niya ang lahat ng akusasyon ng pang-aabuso sa kababaihan at kabataan—hindi siya dapat makalusot muli (Although he has pending cases both in the US and the Philippines, they should not be an excuse. The quest for justice must roll on. He must face all the allegations of abuse against women and children. He must not get away from it),” she said.
Brosas added that accountability must not stop with Quiboloy alone. It must extend to his "backers and protectors". she said.
Quiboloy is the spiritual adviser of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
