Godfrey Okumu has been elevated to head coach of the Galeries Tower Highrisers in the Premier Volleyball League, the team announced on Friday, Aug. 22.
Okumu is filling in the shoes left by Lerma Giron, who led the team as head coach for the past two years. He has served as Giron’s assistant during that time.
“A familiar face. A trusted leader. Coach Godfrey Okumu returns to guide the Highrisers as head coach,” the team posted on social media.
This would be Okumu’s first stint as head coach since mentoring Motolite in 2019. He previously coached the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons in the UAAP women’s volleyball from 2017 to 2022.
The Highrisers have been searching for a breakthrough performance since joining the league in 2023, with their best finish so far being eighth place in the 2024-25 All-Filipino.
They struggled in the recent PVL On Tour, where they finished winless in five preliminary games and were eliminated by Chery Tiggo in the knockout round.
The team features a mix of young and experienced players led by this year’s second overall Rookie Draft pick Jean Asis, Jewel Encarnacion, France Ronquillo and Ysa Jimenez.
