Meralco exec Joe Zaldarriaga advocates media literacy to counter misinformation

Seasoned communications executive Joe R. Zaldarriaga has underscored the vital role of media literacy in today’s information landscape as he addressed foreign service officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on August 20, 2025.
Speaking at the launch of the DFA’s “Truth, Talk and Tactics” media and information literacy program, Zaldarriaga’s shared knowledge and insights on addressing misinformation and disinformation - a cause he has been advocating for years.
“In the current digital landscape, decoding fake news is an ongoing journey of critical thinking. Thus, foreign service officers must ensure that the public only receives timely, accurate and verified information,” Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, said.
“I also advocate for media literacy, we need to make our peers more equipped to reduce the spread of misinformation. This will enable us to lead with transparency and integrity, ensuring that truth prevails to safeguard public trust,” the official, who also serves as a board member at the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, added.
With almost four decades of experience as a professional communicator, Zaldarriaga encouraged responsible public relations and communications practice during the session.
He expressed support to the DFA’s important cause that aims to empower their personnel by sharing communication knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to discern credible information, combat the spread of disinformation, and foster responsible digital citizenship.
