DAVAO CITY — The “Limang Buwan, Isang Sigaw: Free Duterte Concert” drew thousands of supporters at the Coastal Road Bazaar on Friday, Aug. 22, five months after former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s detention at the International Criminal Court.
The event blended political advocacy with cultural performances, with attendees from families and youth groups to community organizations waving banners and wearing shirts emblazoned with the slogan "Free Duterte."
Among those present were Sen. Christopher Lawrence Go, acting Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte II, second district Rep. Omar Vincent Duterte, and Puwersa ng Pilipinong Pandagat party-list nominee Bryan Lim.
Vice Mayor Duterte described the gathering as proof of their shared cause. "We are here for a reason that transcends differences in religion, culture, and beliefs—and that is our love for Tatay Digong."
The vice mayor recalled how his grandfather placed the Filipino people’s welfare at the center of his leadership. He lashed out at what he called the “callous actions” of the administration, labeling it “dictatorial, corrupt, and elitist.”
Vice Mayor Duterte said the patriarch's arrest was a political mistake and urged officials to admit it. “Listen as we speak, and watch as we move with the people,” he declared, adding that their movement remain peaceful and grounded in public service.
Rep. Omar Duterte echoed the call for unity, telling supporters to remain steadfast in fighting for what is “right and just." He urged them to carry forward the former President’s legacy by working collectively for the future of the country.
Rep. Omar Duterte disclosed that he and his brother will travel to The Hague next week to join their father, Rep. Paolo Duterte, and visit former President Duterte.
The gathering marked one of the largest public demonstrations of support for former President Duterte since his detention, underscoring his continued influence, particularly in Mindanao.
The event remained peaceful throughout the evening. Organizers said more peaceful actions are being planned until their call for former President Duterte’s release is heard.
The concert featured both seasoned and contemporary performers, including Giselle Sanchez, Aila Santos & R2K, Wency Cornejo, Lazy Fat, Silent Sanctuary, Isla Riddim, and Joey Ayala.
